Collabora Productivity contributions in LibreOffice 26.2

For over 12 years, Collabora Productivity has been privileged to work as one part of a broader community of enthusiastic developers, both volunteers and paid, collaborating to make an open source office suite that is free to download and trusted by millions of users.

The LibreOffice codebase is the foundation of Collabora Online, our enterprise, document-editing and online collaboration product – and as long-standing members of the community, we are excited to contribute to LibreOffice releases with 26.2 available today!

Our contributions

With the merger with allotropia software GmbH in May 2025, our commits to the codebase for 2025 (from January to the end of December), as per The Document Foundation’s State of the Project 2025, amounted to around 45% of the total commits from over 50 individuals. While Collabora Productivity is part of a global community of committers, we were fortunate enough to be able to contribute more than half of the documented features from the release notes for LibreOffice 26.2. In terms of total commits, this amounted to around 2,000, but, more importantly, fixed over 500 issues (including commits merged from 25.8 to 26.2.02). The chart shows the feature areas from the release notes where Collabora engineers contributed code.

Improvements in LibreOffice 26.2

It is fair to say this release focuses less on new features and instead offers many improvements to app performance and a smoother overall experience with LibreOffice. Collabora Productivity, together with peers in the community, have also worked diligently to improve interoperability and compatibility issues, and here are some of Collabora’s contribution highlights:

Writer: Auto Captions and Fixes

AutoCaptions – When you paste in an image, Writer auto-inserts a caption, as long as you check the box in Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > AutoCaptions.
Better handling of Floating Tables – Tables are better behaved! Previously, Writer prioritised keeping tables and headers together, which meant they could both slide onto the next page if there wasn’t enough space left on the page. Sometimes this disrupted document flow, creating a large gap on the previous page, but this is now fixed. Read how it was fixed on Miklos Vajna’s blog.
Better DOCX interoperability for Floating Tables – The handling of the Table Split feature has improved. Prior to 26.2, this would result in two floating tables inside one frame, which couldn’t be exported to DOCX.

Track Changes improved – You have greater choice when handling interdependent changes now, and can select the ‘layer’ to change in the Manage Changes, e.g., you can choose a format change that’s on top of a Delete or Insert change.

Calc: Supporting more features

BIFF12 support – The max limit for pasting from Excel to Calc has increased. Prior to 26.2, Calc could paste 65,536 rows. With the Biff12 file format (Excel 2007+) supported, users can paste 1,048,576 rows by 16,384 columns per sheet.
XmlMaps support – Users spotted that XLSX spreadsheets lost xmlMaps.xml when opened in Calc and saved as an XLSX file. With xmlMaps.xml support, users can create direct, structural links between cells and external XML data files, e.g., turning Calc into an interface for managing XML data.

Chart: Live Preview for Sidebar

Live Preview – It’s quicker to select colour schemes. When a user mouses over Chart data range colour palette entries, it shows a live preview in the active chart.

Performance: Boosts and Fixes

Calc – Lots of fixes, like faster scrolling on spreadsheets with many hidden columns, faster removal of duplicates, and Reject All in Track Changes was slow to complete, so that’s been optimised.
Graphics – Again, a lot more optimisation for many user cases, especially when exporting SVGs with bitmaps and importing certain SVGs (usually because of fills) and polygons (with tiled image fill) that were noticeably slow to render.
UI – for example, Go To Page / Slide / Sheet Dialogs are async now, which means the UI stays responsive when navigating large documents.

UI: New Context Menu option

Insert Hyperlink – Another new time-saver courtesy of the Context Menu, which works across all the core apps. This time, when you highlight text, and the Context Menu pops up automatically, you will find an ‘Inset Hyperlink’ as an option.

Filters: Improved Interoperability and Markdown

Markdown – Both Markdown export and import features are improved, and you can apply templates to imported Markdown, too, so your documents pick up the colour theme and formatting, for example.
Calc: Generic XML and JSON Tabular Mapping Support – Linkable tabular ranges are auto-mapped to sheets in Calc when opened now. A linkable range is a section of a document containing tabular records. When a document contains multiple linkable ranges, each range gets mapped to a single sheet.

There are many other commits from many people in LibreOffice 26.2, so while we are acknowledging the time and effort contributed by our engineering team here, we want to celebrate the collective contributions of everyone involved in the LibreOffice project.

Collabora Office Desktop vs. Collabora Office Classic

We love LibreOffice. We are privileged to be the largest code contributors to the codebase, Collabora employs several founders of The Document Foundation, and many of the top committers. We offer a Long Term supported product based on LibreOffice, branded as Collabora Office Classic, and are deeply grateful for and acknowledge many skilled community contributors we work alongside, as well as the incredible range of features that LibreOffice code enables.

Collabora Office for desktop’s initial release is not (yet) enterprise supported, but we encourage our customers and partners to evaluate it for deployment in 2026 and to provide feedback.

If you need tools like the Base database module (including Java-based components) or the full Math module, Classic remains the right choice – Collabora Office isn’t trying to replicate those. Collabora Office will run macros, but for advanced macro authoring and debugging you should use Classic. . For extreme Calc workloads (think complex Solver models or analysis across hundreds of thousands of rows) Classic is likely the better fit.

Where Collabora Office differs, it does so deliberately: no Java dependency, which means a smaller, cleaner install, less baggage on startup, and a single, self-contained download. Collabora Office also focuses on a streamlined, modern UI that highlights the tools most people use every day, while Classic offers an extraordinary level of power, extensibility and configurability.

In summary – the aim with Collabora Office and Collabora Online is simple: intuitive, fast, and focused – a beautiful desktop office suite offering the workflows most professionals use every day to create, edit, and collaborate, online and offline.

What a Difference 3 Years Makes

TL;DR
Collabora Online 22.05 has reached end-of-support. In the three years since it was released, we’ve shipped 11,780 commits across the suite, including most recently a major UI/UX refresh (contextual toolbars, smart tabs, responsive toolbars, presenter controls, iconised menus). If you’re still on 22.05, now’s the time to upgrade to enjoy a smoother, more powerful, more familiar, more accessible Collabora Online.

Collabora Online 22.05 has served teams well, but all good releases eventually hand over the baton. End‑of‑support means no more fixes or security updates will be coming for that line. Your documents will still open of course – but you won’t enjoy any further updates or the polish we’ve added to the suite since.

The 22.05 release introduced features like support for external grammar checking in the browser, “jumbo spreadsheets” with up to 16,384 columns, Sparklines in Calc, WebP image import across apps, Content Controls in Writer for better DOCX compatibility, and a new Accessibility Checker. We also laid foundations for bandwidth and CPU performance wins with smarter tile updates.

Since then however we’ve done even more to improve the Collabora Online experience for everyone.

A UI/UX that reduces friction

The modern Collabora Online interface prioritises discoverability and familiarity. Contextual tabs surface relevant tools only when you need them. An on‑selection formatting popup brings common actions within thumb‑reach. A responsive toolbar groups intelligently instead of forcing horizontal scrollbars. And a tidier, more useful Navigation Sidebar keeps find/replace and document structure together. Just a few of the latest features you’ll enjoy on upgrading.

Performance that you can feel

We can’t possibly list all the performance updates over the past three years in one paragraph, but notable recent updates include a reworked client‑side rendering engine to be smarter about when to draw, to batch DOM changes, and to free memory more aggressively. Large documents, 4K displays, and scrolling workloads will feel smoother and more consistent. Upgrade to try it out!

Collaboration, reviewing & authoring

Upgrades to comments (thread clarity, @mentions, quicker shortcuts), Styles Spotlight in Writer for auditing and standardising formatting across a document, hyphenation control for layout fidelity, named ranges improvements and focus cell highlighting in Calc, plus tools like duplicate record handling for faster data cleaning.

Security & compliance improvements

Beyond patches, recent security updates include Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) support with eID Easy, PDF 2.0 support, and hiding server signature settings to avoid advertising exact versions. Admins also get better WOPI troubleshooting, and a comment‑only mode for stricter review workflows.

22.05 has helped thousands of teams collaborate with confidence. But the bar for usability, performance, and security keeps rising, and so do we. Clean Up Your Data in Seconds

With this feature, you can quickly identify and remove duplicate entries from your spreadsheets, helping you keep your data clean, accurate, and analysis-ready. Ideal for managing contact lists, financial data, or large datasets.

Summary Above and Below Data

Collabora Office 25.04 improves compatibility with Excel by correctly displaying subtotals either above or below the grouped data – just as they were originally set.

Previously, subtotals only appeared below data groups, but this update ensures accurate placement during import, enhancing usability for structured datasets, financial reports, and analytical spreadsheets. A small change with a big impact on interoperability.

New Functions

Collabora Office now includes several powerful new functions, enhancing spreadsheet capabilities. Key additions include XLOOKUP and XMATCH, offering more flexible and intuitive ways to search and match data. New dynamic array functions like FILTER, SORT, SORTBY, UNIQUE, SEQUENCE, and RANDARRAY make working with large datasets easier by allowing advanced filtering, sorting, and automatic sequence generation. These updates ensure better interoperability with Excel, while also providing users with more powerful tools for data analysis and automation.

New Charts

Collabora Office now supports two new chart types—”Pie-of-Pie” and “Bar-of-Pie”—which break down a slice of a pie chart into a separate sub-chart. This enhancement improves data visualization and ensures better compatibility with Excel-created documents containing these chart types. Whether analysing budget breakdowns or survey results, these new charts help make complex data more digestible.

Solver Gets Smarter

Collabora Office 25.04 brings powerful enhancements to the Solver tool in Calc. You can now save Solver models directly within your spreadsheet, making it easier to reuse and share complex problem-solving setups.

Additionally, Solver can now generate a sensitivity analysis report, helping you better understand how changes in input values impact your results – ideal for financial forecasting, logistics, and other decision-making tasks.

Impress

Embedded Fonts in Presentations

With font embedding now supported in .PPTX files, your chosen fonts travel with the file, preserving layout, style, and branding across devices and platforms.

Whether you’re collaborating with a team, presenting on a different computer, or sharing slides externally, font embedding eliminates the risk of missing or substituted fonts ruining your design.

Comments Improvements

With support from the Open Source Initiative (OSI), we have improved our comment system in Writer, making it easier to collaboratively review documents, especially with larger comments or longer comment threads – showing parent-child relationships clearly, expanded comment views, @ing users in comments and quicker shortcuts such as Ctrl+Enter to save a comment, and enabling the direct copying of text from comments.

Styles Sidebar with Spotlight

Creating professional, polished documents has never been easier! The enhanced Styles Sidebar in Collabora Online now features a Spotlight mode, allowing you to visually highlight each style within your document. This makes it effortless to check, refine, and ensure consistent formatting throughout—perfect for producing high-quality reports, proposals, or academic papers. No more hunting through menus or guessing which style is applied—just clear, instant visibility and control over your document’s appearance.

In an additional user experience win, the style tab now also has a scroll bar that can be used in alongside the central mouse wheel to scroll through styles.

Navigation Sidebar

In another UI update aimed at improving productivity and reducing the need to switch views – our Navigation Sidebar is now accessible from a small compass icon and has been moved to the left-hand side of the Writer window. This enables users to display more of the user interface at once, for example using the Navigator Sidebar and the new Styles Spotlight tool at the same time, utilising screen real-estate more efficiently, especially when working on portrait A4 documents.

Smoother Editing

With the latest release, we’ve invested a lot of work into improving the performance at the client-side, in the browser. For example by being smarter about when to render documents and batching DOM changes, to incrementally freeing memory, we have greatly improved performance in some cases bringing performance from 11fps -> 60fps.

Above: It is easier to see the smoother memory usage, and reduced DOM Worker usage on the 25.04 profile. Additionally there is no longer any periods of system lockout (red bars at the top of the 24.04 profile)

Below: The system is at rest 40% of the time compared to 21% previously. This means more capacity for working smoothly even with larger document and high-density displays. This has come in particular from significant reduction in DOM usage from 23% to 7%.

The newly improved Viewport-Based Preloading takes performance to the next level, making editing large documents smoother and more responsive than ever. By focusing resources on the visible area of a document, we’ve boosted rendering speeds even with lengthy, complex files. Additionally – the new ‘Reinstate’ deletion feature allows users to see when a suggested deletion has been rejected with the original text reinstated, rather than simply rejecting the change with no record of the suggested deletion. This feature is especially useful in the legal industry.

Rootless Containers & Server Signature Hiding – Flexible protected deployment

Collabora Online is run in rootless containers, however this is now achieved with Linux namespaces, providing greater security and flexibility for deployments. By leveraging Linux namespaces, this feature isolates processes without requiring root privileges, reducing potential attack surfaces and enhancing the containerised security.

Additionally, the new Hiding Server Signature feature helps protect against targeted attacks by concealing the exact version of Collabora Online running on a server. By default, production builds now return only a generic server signature, making it harder for attackers to fingerprint server configurations. These updates strengthen security and reliability, giving administrators more control over their deployment environment.

Precision & Control for Spreadsheets

Focus Cell Highlighting – Visually track active cells

In this release, we introduce Focus Cell Highlighting, making it simpler than ever to track your active cell in large spreadsheets. With a clear visual highlight extending across the entire row and column, users can quickly see relationships between data points and navigate data-dense sheets with ease. This small but powerful enhancement should reduce errors inputting cells in formulas, and other workflows where highlighting the row and column is beneficial.

Named Ranges ('A1:B10' = 'Expenditure') – Easier referencing of spreadsheet data

Not a new feature, but working with ‘Named Ranges’ has been improved in 25.04. The ‘Data’ tab has a named ranges section for easier access, named ranges can be selected from the address input field dropdown, and they are available in an autocomplete popup when referencing ranges. This all means working with large datasets is faster, more intuitive, and reduces errors in data entry. Instead of manually referencing cell ranges like A1:B10, users can assign meaningful names like “Expenditure” or “Quarterly Sales”, making formulas and references much easier to read and manage. This feature helps eliminate confusion, improve spreadsheet organization, and streamline collaboration.

Performance matters, and Collabora Online now loads and processes XLSX files faster than ever, especially those with extensive conditional formatting. Duplicate Record Handling – Easily identify and remove duplicate entries

New "Summary Below Data" Option – More control over subtotal placement

In a new interop win, spreadsheets created in Excel, and then opened with Collabora Online correctly display data summaries either above or below the data – according to the settings chosen in Excel. Previously, subtotal rows would only appear below the grouped values, but with this option, users can position them above instead – enhancing flexibility in data analysis, financial reporting, and structured datasets. This aligns Collabora Online with user expectations from other spreadsheet tools and improves overall spreadsheet usability.

Collabora Online now includes several powerful new functions, enhancing spreadsheet capabilities. Autofill Improvements – Smarter number series filling with previews

The enhanced Autofill feature in Collabora Online now provides users with greater control and clarity when extending data in spreadsheets. Instead of automatically choosing one method, you’ll be given the option to either extend a series (e.g. continuing 1, 2, 3 into 4, 5, 6) or copy the existing cells (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3). Additionally, a new live preview appears while dragging, allowing you to see the final result before releasing the mouse. This is especially useful when working with dates, numbers, and sequences, removing the need to delete unnecessary data or further extend a series.

New chart types "Pie-of-Pie" and "Bar-of-Pie"

Collabora Online now supports two new chart types—”Pie-of-Pie” and “Bar-of-Pie”—which break down a slice of a pie chart into a separate sub-chart. This enhancement improves data visualization and ensures better compatibility with Excel-created documents containing these chart types. Whether analysing budget breakdowns or survey results, these new charts help make complex data more digestible.

Font Embedding in PPTX

We’re excited to introduce font embedding in .pptx files. This powerful new feature ensures your presentations look exactly the way you designed them, no matter where they’re opened. Whether you’re collaborating across teams or sharing slides with clients, embedded fonts eliminate formatting issues caused by missing typefaces, ensuring seamless interoperability between different systems and document editors.

With font embedding, your presentations will stay sharp, professional, and on-brand. No more surprises when presenting from someone else’s computer or a conference room setup. Your carefully chosen typography will display precisely as intended, preserving the layout, tone, and visual impact.

ZSTD Compression

Previously with presentations we converted images to PNG files, before sending the PNG files to the client. This was inefficient, and slowed down presentations unnecessarily. With the use of ZSTD compression, we now compress the raw rendered data, a much faster process than creating a PNG, before sending the compressed data (significantly less data than PNG files) to the client where it can be quickly decompressed and the raw data rendered using bitmaps. Our initial testing has shown ~40% reduction in time to open a presentation.

Accessibility Improvements

Over the past year, we have continued to build on our excellent accessibility foundations. After commissioning an external company to review our accessibility offering, we have implemented more than 100 accessibility improvements as we make Collabora Online accessible to more and more users.

These changes included adapting layouts and interactions, usability without a mouse – using only a keyboard or assistive devices, enhancing focus and label visibility, clarifying ARIA roles and enhancing interactive elements, improving screen reader functionality and much more.

Form Filling API – Enhanced document form support

Handling interactive forms in documents is now more powerful with the new Form Filling API. This allows users to fill out and process forms more efficiently, enabling seamless integration into business workflows, surveys, and administrative processes.

Integrated into Nextcloud Office for example, users may now create a template which can be prefilled with values from a popup window.

Server Config help – Faster troubleshooting

Managing and configuring a server just got easier. With improved Server Config Help, admins can quickly troubleshoot issues, access clearer guidance, and optimize their setup with less downtime.

Achieve seamless formatting across office suites with even more metrics-compatible fonts. These fonts ensure better document fidelity, reducing formatting inconsistencies when switching between applications like Microsoft Office and Collabora Online.

Faster Font Formatting

We’ve made significant improvements to how Collabora Online handles formatting changes – especially when applying styles and fonts to large selections.

Previously, Collabora Online spent a lot of time managing internal formatting data (called ItemSets), which had grown complex and inefficient over time. With a major cleanup and refactoring, ItemSets are now faster, more consistent, and safer to work with. Depending on the size of your document, this results in a dramatic speed boost when changing properties (e.g., fonts) with operations running up to 4× faster in our testing.

These improvements are just part of our ongoing work to streamline Collabora Online’s core, unlocking greater performance, ensuring it scales smoothly even with the most demanding documents.

Gone are the days of hunting for an HDMI to Mini DisplayPort dongle before the boardroom presentation. With the unstoppable rise of work from home and powerful video-conferencing apps, screen sharing has become by far the most common mode of sharing information and presentations. This, however, has left most presentation editors and workers in a difficult situation, unable to see their own presentation notes, follow meeting minutes, or perhaps more importantly observe the facial expressions on their colleague’s webcams. Instead, with screen sharing a full-screen presentation everything else is lost to the presenter in the background.

Collabora Online’s novel approach, now adds the option to ‘Present in Window’ – as the name suggests presenting the presentation in a new window, rather than full screen.
